7 Ways Writing Makes You Smarter (Even If You Don’t Feel Smart Yet)
Why your ideas deserve to live outside your head

People say that, “Actions speak louder than words.”
But I’d argue that, “thoughts speak louder than actions.”
Think about it. Our thoughts drive everything we do. They shape who we are. But in reality — thoughts are just floating ideas until you do something with them.
Invisible.
Half-formed.
Often messy.
Writing turns those thoughts into something real. It lets you take a closer look at what’s really going on in your head — like opening a window into your own mind.
So what happens when we write online?
I like to call it learning in public. Because it gives your thoughts a vessel. Think of each post, note, or tweet as a little robot you send out into the world.
It goes out
collects information
brings back feedback
sharpens your idea
Finally upgrading you in the process.
Let’s break it down 👇
1. Writing Helps You Understand Your Own Thoughts
You can’t interrogate what you don’t see!
Putting your thoughts down forces you to slow down and actually understand them. Ever experience how a vague idea suddenly becomes clearer — just by writing it out?
2. It Turns Learning into a Feedback Loop
Writing online gives your ideas legs. You send them out, and they come back stronger. (Sort of like leg day 💪 )
Here’s an embarrassing story 😅
I vividly remember a moment when two of the smartest classmates were knee deep in a heated debate about AI.
One was convinced it would eventually enslave us.
The other argued humans would always remain in control.
Both made solid points — but all I could think was how stupid I felt for having literally nothing to contribute.
No opinion. No voice. Just standing on the sidelines, invisible. That feeling stuck with me
Fast forward a year, after writing online consistently, I’d have a lot to say in that debate.
But not because I suddenly devoted my life to studying AI… or built a robot best friend named ChadGPT.
But simply because putting my thoughts into the world exposed me to more informed voices. The opinions of others helped shape my own.
And that’s the power of writing online — it pulls you into the conversation, even if you start out as a silent observer
3. Writing Makes You Brave
Sure, everyone has brilliant ideas. But it takes courage to share them.
When you write publicly, you open yourself up to criticism, misunderstanding, even mockery. But you also open the door to growth, clarity, and connection. That’s a trade worth making.
4. It Forces You to Be Proactive
The best writers don’t wait for inspiration to strike.
They strike whenever inspiration hits.
Writing regularly teaches you to capture momentum, not wait for it.
5. You Solidify Your Opinions
When you write often, your ideas evolve.
You become more opinionated — not because you’re stubborn, but because you are more informed.
You’ve already wrestled with your own thoughts enough to know what you stand for.
6. You Build a Mental Archive
I’ve replied to people in conversations using the exact words I wrote in an old tweet or post.
Writing online builds a library of clear thinking of your own thoughts. A library of your own, that you can pull from — anytime, anywhere.
7. Writing Becomes Your Identity
Online writing is self-discovery in public.
It’s physical proof of who you are, what you believe, and how far you’ve come.
Writing makes you immortal
In the end, our words outlive us. They will echo long after we're gone — sparking thoughts, and connecting minds we’ll never get to meet.
You're not just expressing yourself — you're leaving behind proof that you were here.
A digital soulprint.
So write!
Even if it’s messy.
Even if it’s uncertain.
Because one day, your words might be exactly what someone else needs.

I’m assuming most people reading this are already writers and can relate.
